It’s your chance to see hidden places and try out new experiences – and it’s all FREE.

Beverley & East Riding Golf Club is delighted to welcome visitors to view the Anti-Mill and the Marne clock. The Mill was originally a working mill, and visitors can enjoy splendid views over the Westwood towards the racecourse and the town

Beverley & East Riding Golf Club, founded in 1889, is the oldest inland golf club in Yorkshire. It sits on the historic Beverley Westwood pasture, known for its grazing cows, racecourse and the two landmark windmills: Black Mill and the “Anti Mill”, around which the clubhouse was traditionally built. The 18‑hole course offers excellent views of Beverley and the surrounding countryside from many points. The club’s first recorded meeting took place on 23 October 1889 at the Holderness Hotel on Toll Gavel, Beverley.

The Anti Mill was originally called Baitson’s Mill after a local cooperative formed to break away from the Union Mill (Black Mill). Joseph Baitson rebuilt the mill in 1802 in stone to replace an earlier wooden structure; it was one of five working mills on the common at that time. When miller James Thirsk ended operations in 1897, the mill was partially dismantled and reduced in height.

In 1906 the Pasture Masters agreed to lease the land to the golf club for an annual rent of £10, with the lease running from 1 June. The club moved into its present headquarters in December 1906. Beverley & East Riding Golf Club is also home to the East Riding Golf Union.

The Marne clock that now stands on the mill was made by G. J. F. Newey of York and was moved to the site from the York Road racing stables in 1919. Local resident Bert Best professionally restored the clock in 1999.
