Beverley and East Riding Golf Club is to be featured in the May edition of Beverley Life.
Here’s an extract of the article:
Golf is booming in Beverley!
It has been a busy start for Beverley Golf Club and the return to golf was even featured on ‘Calendar’ news!
The first two weeks have proved a roaring success for the Professional and members at Beverley Golf Club. Since reopening the Club has held a Drive-in for its new Lady Captain, Jan Dickens and the members competed fiercely for the ‘Beverley 400’ trophy. The background to this is that in 1974 Beverley celebrated the 400th year of the Anniversary of granting the Town’s charter and recognition the Corporation presented this trophy to be competed for annually.
Due to Covid restrictions, the traditional drive-in needed some ingenuity and so Jan’s drive was recorded on video and members were asked to guess the length of the longest drive. The closest answers were chosen by two previous Lady Captains, Linda Dale and Mary Rutherford and they were happily rewarded by prizes of Prosecco!
Despite recent cold weather, the sun shone brightly on that day and everyone was able to enjoy mulled wine and food provided by the Marne restaurant in the ‘suntrap’ courtyard next to the clubhouse. Walkers may not realise that they are very welcome to enjoy a cold drink there after enjoying a stroll on the Westwood.
Congratulations are also due to the ladies B team who chalked up their first home win of the season in an enjoyable close fought match with KP Golf Club.
Despite the return of wintry conditions, the enthusiastic members of the Beginners and Ladies Academy wrapped up warm to enjoy their first coaching session. Covid restrictions meant that the Academy members have had to wait a long time, but this did not deter recruitment and both groups filled up quickly and everyone learnt some putting tips on their first golfing lesson from Paul, our club professional. Before the lockdown, two sessions were arranged but due to high demand there has been enough interest to double the number of groups and the Club is now looking at ways to arrange more sessions for those people on our waiting list.
