Captain’s Newsletter 30th Sept

Welcome to my latest newsletter, as Autumn starts to take a hold it seems no time at all that I was writing my first messages back in March.

Whilst most serious summer golf has now passed there is still much to look forward to with the new winter league starting soon and various competitions to be held during the winter.

Thank you to everyone who has put their names down for the Captains Charity Challenge matches, Paul and I haven’t forgotten about them, it’s simply been a case of other commitments meaning we haven’t been able to fit them in but we’re now starting to fill the diary again with these enjoyable fixtures, played in great spirit and for a great cause. If you haven’t put your names down yet, please do so as we intend to play these through the winter until my tenure as Captain ends.

Some notable events have taken place over the last few weeks. Firstly, congratulations to Rich Norton on his fantastic course record of 60 shots! Unbelievable golf and the Club recognised this achievement by presenting Rich with an engraved decanter at the recent members evening.

Speaking of the members evening, this was held recently, primarily to inform members of the plans for course improvements. The plans are on display in the Clubhouse now so if you have any questions or comments please get in touch. It was a well-attended meeting, and the plans were received well. The greens team are now working towards commencing the first phase of the project in November as soon as the cattle leave the Westwood.

Last weekend saw the playing of our very own version of the Ryder Cup which saw 72 members playing a combination of fourballs, foursomes and singles matches with yours truly captaining the victorious European team over the USA team captained by vice-Captain Pat Howdle. Eat your heart out Padraig! It was a tremendous day, thoroughly enjoyed by all and it was great to see the clubhouse full of lots of laughs and banter. My personal thanks to everyone who made the day go smoothly and everyone who played. You may be pleased to hear it’s our intention for this to become an annual fixture.

Finally, an upcoming event to take note of. October will mark the first anniversary of the appointment of our very popular club professional, Mr Paul Gibson. Plans are in hand for a competition to be held on 16th October to mark this anniversary with a charitable angle in support of our developing junior golf section and the Captains Charity. Look out for further news soon regarding format and tee sheets. If anyone feels they can contribute to the day or the fundraising, please get in touch.

Thanks for reading, happy golfing!
