Lady Captain’s Newsletter 6 Sept

As Lady Captain I regularly send Newsletters to our Lady Members, however, I realise that means that the majority of members are unaware of how busy our Ladies’ Section is. I will endeavour to share with you some of our news!

On the 24th August we had our Ladies Exchange Day at Whitby Golf Club; a most enjoyable day of golf following by the best fish and chip supper (my choice of menu). I am so pleased though that the ladies’ red tee avoided driving over the ravine! Congratulations to the winning team of Liz Hodgson, Sue O’Connor, Juliet Pile and Gabby Calvert with a score of 84 points.

Each week we play a weekly competition on Tuesday mornings. On the 31st August we played the first round of the Adderley Cup. Again, congratulations to Linda Robinson with 1st place in Div 1 with 74 points and to Pam Woodall with 1st Place in Div 2 with 74 points.

Other competition winners in August include:-

Stirling Trophy Foursome Strokeplay – 1st Place Linda Worthington and Juliet Pile Nett 72
Qualifying Stableford – 1st Place Angela Holland 37 points
Greensides Trophy – Div1 1st place Angela Morris 74 Div 2 1st Place Sue Collins 75

We have had some very competitive, close and enjoyable Matches against other clubs at HOME and AWAY over the past few months with 7 ladies representing Beverley in the A Team, 7 ladies in the B Team, 3 ladies in the Weekend Team and a varying number in our Friendly matches. This is an excellent response from our small Ladies Section.

The A Team lost 3-4 to Ganstead at HOME (one match had to be conceded due to a last-minute Covid ping!)

The B Team lost to Hull AWAY by 1 ½ to 5 ½

The Weekend League won to Cave Castle at HOME 2-1

We have Friendly Matches planned with Hornsea AWAY on the 10th September and Hainsworth at HOME on the 17th September. A big thank you to Angela Holland for organising these matches which have been a great success.

Academy and Academy Plus Members

Last year Beverley Golf Club committed to the Women in Golf Charter. One of our Aims in our Action Plan was to increase the number of women and girls playing golf. This also included promoting a Membership Pathway for women and girls to progress in golf.

Since then we were awarded the COVID-19 Grant and part of this has been used to support the development of our Golf Academy, including the purchase of golf equipment for new members and the placing of Academy Tee Markers on the side of the fairways. From our Women in Golf and Family Taster Days there have been five Academy Groups (each group containing six members) taught by Paul or Theo. A total of 26 ladies and 2 men have taken part in the scheme to date.

From these groups two have become full members and five have joined our Academy Plus scheme. The other golfers are presently part of the 3 months Academy groups.

After the completion of a Yorkshire Union Golf Club Grant Application at the end of July I am pleased to announce we have also been awarded a grant of £500 to further support our recruitment process, this time to target men and women.

Yorkshire Veterans

Congratulations to Angela Morris who recently played in her last Yorkshire Veterans’ match against Cumbria. Angela won 2-1 and the Yorks Team won 6-1 overall. She has also been selected as a travelling reserve for the Northern Team. Very well done to Angela.

On Tuesday 7th September we are having our Ladies Past Captains’ Day followed by lunch in the clubhouse. We are looking forward to welcoming a number of Past Captains.

On Wednesday 8th September we have an Academy and Ladies Texas Scramble in the evening followed by a social evening with drinks and nibbles.

Finally, we are looking forward to joining the EGGs on Friday 1st October for a mixed competition.

Happy Golfing!

Jan Dickens
