Captain’s Newsletter 4th August

Many thanks to all those members, club staff, family and friends who made my Captain’s Weekend such a great success.

Enjoying the sunshine, nearly 200 players took part in the two competitions and having met everyone at the Halfway House on the Saturday, I can only say how much we enjoyed the friendly banter and good humour that is such a vital part of the Beverley and East Riding Golf Club experience.

Everyone was happy to be out on the course, which was in superb condition thanks to the hard work of our Greens team, including of course Dave Jackson, who won the Captain’s Prize for the best nett score of 65 on Saturday.

Congratulations to Dave and all the other winners, especially the Am-Am team of Kev Bulless, Alun Davies, Kieron Traynor and Mick Manterfield who won Sunday’s competition with 92 points!

Our ladies section entered a couple of teams and their winners were Veronica Farrar, Liz Hodgson, Sue O’Connor and Kerry Grubb-Moore.

All the “on-course” prizewinners have been contacted and several were able to pick up their trophies on Monday morning. The rest can be collected from the Professional’s shop in due course. Cash prizes will also be added to members’ accounts as soon as possible.

My sincere thanks go to everyone – too many to name individually – who made the weekend run so seamlessly and made it a truly memorable occasion for me.

There were many favourable comments at the Halfway House not only about the course condition but also the newly-installed tee markers, which are a big improvement.

Finally, your donations to the Halfway House lottery raised a fantastic total of £413.68! The winner was Matthew Dobbie, who was more than pleased to win a bottle of malt whisky.

All donations go to the ‘50/50 for 2020’ Club Charity with 50% going to the NHS Queens Cancer Centre at Castle Hill Hospital and the other half going back to our membership to buy something for their benefit early next year when my Captaincy ends.

Thank you for that huge total, a credit to members and well-wishers taking part in the lottery draw and enjoying the traditional Halfway House.

Best wishes to everyone and let’s continue to enjoy our Summer golf and keep Sunday 20th September free in your diary for a special event with further details to follow soon.

Warmest regards,
Carl Sheppard
